HELIÓPOLIS

An orchestra in a community

The Heliópolis Symphony Orchestra (OSH), an advanced group at the Baccarelli Institute, has Isaac Karabtchevsky as artistic director and conductor.

The group was the first orchestra in the world that emerged in a favela. It was born as a string orchestra from the solidarity initiative of conductor Silvio Baccarelli and, today, it is one of the main youth symphonic groups in the country.

It is internationally recognized for its artistic quality, being the only orchestra in South America that had the opportunity and honor to be conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta, patron of the Baccarelli Institute since 2005.

The assistant conductor is Edilson Ventureli, responsible for preparing the group and also for conducting the orchestra in different concerts, especially in the popular concert season. Edilson has also been the Executive Director of Instituto Baccarelli since 1998.

Over the years, OSH has performed annual seasons on the most prestigious stages in São Paulo, such as: Sala São Paulo, Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, MASP Auditorium (Museu de Artes de São Paulo) and Auditório Ibirapuera - in these last 2, it has held two seasons of special concerts during the Covid-19 pandemic, with live broadcasts that reached thousands of people throughout Brazil and the world.

The orchestra's curriculum includes other important stages in Brazil and even in the world, such as: Gasteig (Munich – Germany); Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam – Netherlands) and participation in events such as: Beethoven Festival (Bonn – Germany) and Rock'n Rio (Brazil), and numerous outdoor concerts, in spaces such as Ibirapuera Park (SP) and Copacabana Beach (RJ) ).

In addition to conductor Zubin Mehta, the orchestra has performed under the baton of conductors such as Peter Gülke, Yutaka Sado and Marin Alsop. And with classical soloists like Schlomo Mintz, Julian Rachlin, Erik Schumann, Antonio Meneses, André Mehmari and Leonard Elschenbroich. It also brings together a long list of concerts with renowned popular artists, such as Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Luiz Melodia, Samuel Rosa and Mike Patton.

For OSH, quality and diversity are at the same pace. And, with pride, the orchestra connects with the community of Heliópolis far beyond the name and geographical location of its headquarters, but also in the educational mission that the neighborhood embraces.
